Founded in 1935 as Rhodesia Sugar Refinery (and later Zimbabwe Sugar Refinery), the company has grown to become a diversified conglomerate listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. The brands consist of the food, industrial and property divisions. Today, Star Africa's strategic business units comprise of Goldstar Sugars (market leader with its Goldstar sugar brand), Highfield Bag and Polyfilm Plastics (manufacturers and marketers of flexible packaging materials targeting mostly the food and beverage industries), Country Choice Foods (manufacturers and distributors of sugar specialty products such as caster, icing, syrups, old-fashioned brown sugar and treacle), and Silver Star Properties—a property company with a wide range of commercial and industrial buildings under its portfolio. In 2002, Tate & Lyle (UK) Plc divested its interest in Zimbabwe, through a management buyout resulting in localization of ZSR Corporation Limited. Four years later, in 2006, ZSR Corporation rebranded as Star Africa Corporation limited.
